Shanghai Cooperation Organization Delegation Visits the Taihe Institute

Recently, the SCO Secretary-General Vladimir Norov, together with his delegation, visited the Taihe Institute (TI) and conducted in-depth discussions with some of the TI fellows on issues such as the achievements and development strategies of the SCO, what the international environment might look like in the post-pandemic era, and the common opportunities and challenges facing China and the SCO. Both parties expressed their views fully and candidly.

Mr. Norov unfolded the achievements made by the SCO and the SCO Secretariat in areas like regional security, economic and trade cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges. He spoke highly of the decisive and effective actions taken by the Chinese government in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, and called on all countries to explore new ways of cooperation in digital technology, information technology, and economy and trade to jointly tackle the challenges arise from the post-pandemic era.

Mr. Wu Hailong, the Lead Research Fellow in International Relations of the Taihe Institute and President of China Public Diplomacy Association, said that the international and regional situations in the wake of the pandemic have created new challenges for cooperation within the SCO framework. To address these challenges, new ways of cooperation and suggestions on priorities for future development of the SCO need to be explored.

With the pandemic sweeping across the world, unilateralism and trade protectionism are on the rise. The SCO, as a regional international organization, has played a significant role in implementing and developing multilateralism. In future, the Taihe Institute will further strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the SCO and other international multilateral organizations, maintain regular consultations on major global issues, and encourage cooperation and connectivity in regional economies, social studies, humanities, and other fields. This will promote global exchanges and mutual learning, facilitating a pooling of wisdom and strength in the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind.
